It was a pleasant Sunday morning on Camp Victory, not really a special day in any way since we were all staying right on base to work on our stories in the office.  Seems pretty safe, right?  Well, I learned that one must always be alert, because in this environment one absentminded mistake can change your life forever.  I was lucky enough to survive a potential significant event today.

I left the office to go to the porta john which is located between the building and a cement "T" wall barrier.  Periodically, someone with a very unfortunate job (stay in school, kids) comes around and sucks the pit and hoses down the inside of it, leaving water all over.  While I'm glad to have relatively clean surfaces, it's a little icky if you don't dry it off before taking care of business.  So I was wiping the toilet seat down with some TP when the incident occurred.

I was leaning over and much to my surprise, my patrol cap fell off my head.  The next event happened in slow motion but not slow enough for me to react.  Luckily, just like when I'm shooting a basketball, the hat bounced off the toilet seat and tipped outside the rim.  Can you imagine how horrible if it would have fallen down into the pit of despair?!?

So that's enough proof for me to believe in God.  And let that be a lesson to everyone: be alert, remember gravity, and pack an extra hat just in case.
